Poetry month #21: The girl behind the curtain

June 2004

She closes her eyes and says you can’t see her,
Voices her lies and then cries she can’t please you
Her thoughts are replete with aesthete that she thinks is a trend
Pay no attention
To the girl
Behind the curtain

She puts on her makeup and thinks she’s outrageous
Makes all her aches up and claims she’s contagious
Her caring’s got bearing on finding out what you can spend
Pay no attention
To the girl
Behind the curtain

If you fuck her she wanted it sweet
If you love her she just wanted meat
If you talk then she’s mad that you can’t be discreet
If you’re silent she tells every secret you wanted to keep

Here in the land of Oz
It’s always you that is the cause
But she’s not a wizard, wicked witch or tin man
Not a munchkin or a simple girl new here from Kansas
She’s just another hooker and you’re just another john
She may have left the corner but she’s far from moving on.

… moving on…

She walks a pretty beat along her yellow brick road
She’ll dare to complete if she’ll get what she’s owed
Her complexion’s a hex on whoever expects her to bend
Pay no attention
To the girl
Behind the curtain.

You’d better learn to play the game
If you want her all the same –
Just remember that you’ll never win.

(She’d realize that she’s lost
Except she just forgot the score.)

Pay no attention
To the girl
Behind the curtain.
