Happily ever after

I find these old poems

She sits upon a golden stool
And gazes deep into the pool
Of this, her grotto lair
She sighs and lets a dagger lie
A teardrop falling from her eye
Her hair twinkles with pearls
But her shoulders round with despair

After all, you know her better than
She does,
It’s not really her that sings the songs
You can see the enchanted chains
That bind her to these savage games
And you know
If only she would let you in
You’d free her with a kiss
Live happily ever after,
Happily ever after.

By day she sings and plays the snare,
Shows men her breast and lays it bare
You know her smile’s lethal
When she pulls the sailors in
Against the rocks; she plays to win
But at night she’s tormented,
You can see she’s not so cruel

So you take a step in
To her cavern of watery screams
And here in the dark night
You tell her how well you know her,
How nothing can change your love,
How your insight – your strength – your heart
Can rescue her.

She startles, and whispers,

No one else has ever seen
The chains that bind me to this dream –
A nightmare
It’s a habit, it’s a compulsion –
It’s an addiction, it’s just a miserable pattern
It’s not really me that does these things.
It’s a curse; you should beware

You laugh and take her in your arms
And kiss the tears and praise her charms

After all, you know her better than
She does,
It’s not really her that sings the songs
You can see the enchanted chains
That bind her to these savage games
And you know
If only she would let you in
You’d free her with a kiss
Live happily ever after,
Happily ever after.

She gasps at your sincerity –
You bend your head; bestow the kiss
Of true love’s power to dismiss
The witch’s curse
And she kisses back; defenses down
For a moment.
Until she drowns you.
In her pool of tears.

After all, it’s her that sings the songs
Invites men in
To right her wrongs
It’s true she’s bound to savage games
Within this grotto where she reins
And deep insider her heart she knows
As long as men think heros roam
She’ll live happily ever after,
Happily ever after.
