A partial list

I thank you for
– our children, except this one unborn. What would you have me do?
– these Black Jewels books
– some learning in the ways of the light; you know which

It seems a short list. I would thank you for the time, but it was my time as well. I would thank you for the love, but it was mine as well.

And just now I feel it something of a waste.

What of these promises? You said it is like my staying in this marriage, but I never promised to end the marriage. You promised to stay.

I suppose it is the same complaint of the jilted of all time. But you promised. A child’s meaningless protest. And yet it seems the profoundest argument.
